Kiara U is a private research institute founded with a passion to freely allocate resources to research that genuinely contributes to minimizing future risks and maximizing opportunities for humanity.
Financial Independence
Kiara U generates its funding through consulting in finance and physics research, as well as selling proprietary software. This funding is reinvested into meaningful research that may not yield direct financial returns but holds significance for humanity. Additionally, we donate to social organizations that address issues such as disasters and minority rights, aiming to incorporate these societal challenges as new research themes, creating a continuous loop of research and problem-solving.
As a result, we adopt a completely opposite approach to traditional universities. Generally, universities fund their research by collecting tuition from students and receiving budgets from governments and industries, which are then redistributed. This model requires universities to consider the needs of students, governments, and industries, optimizing their research themes accordingly. In contrast, since we operate with our own funds, we can freely choose our research themes. This autonomy is one of our key distinguishing features.
Freedom of Research Themes
Another important aspect is our commitment to pursuing timeless themes while incorporating, but not being confined by, current trends. Common issues humanity faces today include weapons, war, disasters, and pandemics. Research themes addressing these issues should fundamentally be free. However, we observe a recent trend where computer science, particularly AI, has become overly dominant, and we believe that relying solely on AI is not always appropriate. The solutions to problems should be flexible, and whether or not AI is used, the best approach is the one that effectively solves the problem. Furthermore, many frontline situations occur in offline environments or involve individuals without computer science knowledge. We want to continue exploring what kind of science is genuinely useful in such contexts.
The Spread of Science
Our expertise lies in mathematics, and we aim to redefine mathematics in a way that extends beyond the ivory towers of academia, making it more accessible and valuable for solving problems beyond the sciences. Our goal is to have mathematics permeate society, improve people’s lives, and contribute to broader problem-solving. To achieve this, we focus on designing messages and communication strategies that convey the value of mathematics to people worldwide.
In recent years, the quality of information and the prevalence of fake news have become pressing societal issues. In this context, we aim to promote "scientific thinking"—a framework of interpretation grounded in evidence, objective analysis, and critical perspective—to people everywhere. The principles of logic and empirical testing have not yet reached those outside the realm of science, leading to many situations where emotional or illogical arguments prevent optimal decisions. We want to expand these activities to bridge this gap.
Maximizing Social Contribution
Simultaneously, we are exploring ways to redefine venture capital to maximize social impact. In our previous experience in venture capital, there was an inherent contradiction: investments were primarily directed toward ideas aiming for public listing, often missing opportunities to address the challenges faced by those most in need.
To address this, we seek solutions that support NPOs and independent social initiatives through donations and by providing research tools that help these contributions be used more effectively. Our approach accelerates the work of NPO leaders on the ground, not by pursuing profit from IPOs or M&As but by focusing on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to social change. This concept of a "social venture capital" aims to measure success through societal transformation rather than financial gain.
Through Kiara U, we aspire to build an organization capable of addressing a broad spectrum of social issues, fostering a more expansive and inclusive approach to problem-solving.
